"Over the past few years it has become apparent to us that the paving and sealcoating industry has not been well served by cleaning chemical manufacturers," says Kevin Roberts, BioChem Systems vice president. "Safe and effective cleaning products have just not been formulated for this market segment. Typically, workers in this industry are still using hazardous chemicals like glycol ether EB, diesel fuel and chlorinated solvents for cleaning tools and equipment. That’s why BioChem has made such a serious commitment to provide safer cleaning products designed specifically for paving and sealing."

Tarpedo™ destroys coal tar sealer!
Tarpedo is a great example of BioChem’s ongoing commitment to the paving industry. "Our customers told us they needed a safer and more environmentally responsible product to clean up coal tar sealers," said Roberts. "So we went to the lab and formulated Tarpedo. This product is a perfect complement to our highly successful asphalt removal product -TarBuster."

Tarpedo quickly and effectively dissolves ready mix and concentrated coal tar sealers. It’s also very effective in removing asphalt, adhesives, cosmoline, heavy grease and oil and other tough contaminants. And it’s designed to rinse easily with water and dry quickly without leaving any residue.

Like all BioChem products, Tarpedo is considerably safer for the people who use it. Its high flash point (145°F) significantly reduces the risk of fires and it’s completely free of glycol ether EB and other hazardous and chlorinated solvents.

Our customers are using Tarpedo to clean sealer from paving equipment, hand tools, maintenance vehicles, striping machines and other related equipment. And the feedback is all good!

Tarpedo is available in convenient one- and five-gallon containers and 55-gallon drums.

* Both SolSafe 245 & TCE can be distilled. The 50% fraction is usually the cleanest.

Production Problems:
TCE is a very reactive solvent. The biggest potential problem with using TCE is the formation of hydrochloric acid. When TCE is exposed to moisture (air, water, etc.) a chemical reaction occurs and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is formed. This acid formation greatly reduces the pH of the cleaning solution. HCl formation can destroy a tank or the parts that are being cleaned. When this occurs, buffers or “pH inhibitor” chemicals must be added to the tank to prevent corrosion. I have seen stainless steel tanks that have had holes burned through them due to HCl formation.

Advantages of Using SolSafe 245:
There are several advantages to using SolSafe 245 over TCE. SolSafe 245 will greatly reduce the overall amount of VOC emissions. SolSafe 245 will not form HCl or any acid in the cleaning tank. SolSafe 245 is less toxic than TCE. Using SolSafe 245 will reduce the amount of chemicals to be used due to the slow evaporation rate. SolSafe 245 does not appear on the SARA Title 313 List for Toxic Chemicals.

Air Conditioning Cleaning with BioChem SolSafe 245

Cleaning/ degreasing application.

Cleaning air conditioning cooling coils and milling machine condensing coils.

Current problem.

Heavy build-up of grease, oil, and dust on air conditioning cooling coils and milling machine condensing coils.

Large amounts of lubricant and oil fill the air at a major aerospace manufacturing company due to the number of milling machines and other machines designed to shape or form metal.

This grease and oil condenses on the coils of all air conditioning units and milling machines. The heavy grease and oil build-up causes these machines to lose their efficiency.

In the past, many dangerous chlorinated solvents were used to clean these coils. Chlorinated solvents are extremely dangerous for the environment as well as employees. Some chlorinated solvents deplete the ozone layer while others are known human carcinogens.

Aqueous soap solutions were then tried as a replacement for chlorinated solvents. However, due to the significant amounts of residue left behind by aqueous soap solutions, and the weaker cleaning ability of these products, they were found to be much more tedious and time consuming than chlorinated solvents. Also, caution had to be taken to protect equipment from water damage while cleaning with aqueous solutions.

BioChem solution.

SolSafe 245 was tested and approved by this large aerospace manufacturer as the direct replacement for chlorinated solvents in the cleaning of air conditioning and milling machine coils.

SolSafe 245 is a much more efficient cleaner than chlorinated solvents due to its low evaporation rate. While chlorinated solvents evaporate into the air well before the cleaning job is complete, SolSafe 245 will remain on the cleaning surface long enough to completely dissolve all greases and oils.

SolSafe 245 is residue free and has a high dielectric strength of 49,000 V/cm so it can be used on or around electrical equipment.

Stronger cleaning ability and no-rinse residue-free drying make SolSafe 245 superior to aqueous solutions and safer than chlorinated solvents. SolSafe 245 has many advantages, including:

  • SolSafe 245 has a KB value of 106.
  • SolSafe 245 can be filtered and re-used.
  • SolSafe 245 is non-hazardous.
  • SolSafe 245 has a very mild, clean odor.

The advantages are clear. SolSafe 245 can provide you with a very efficient cleaner that has strong solvency power and is safe for the environment.

Cleaning Prior to Painting

Cleaning/degreasing application.

Parts cleaning using a dip tank parts washing system prior to paint.

Problem.

A highly alkaline, caustic cleaner was being used in a wash tank cleaning system to clean parts prior to paint. The customer a major furniture manufacturer complained that his parts were not getting thoroughly cleaned, causing problems in the subsequent painting operation. The alkaline cleaner he used was being neutralized by acidic cutting fluids. To overcome this neutralization, the customer had to maintain a concentration of alkaline cleaner at 50 percent. Heavy build up of soap scum regularly plugged up the wash tank filters.

BioChem solution.

The customer switched to Bio T 300B for cleaning metal parts. The parts are dipped into a 3700-gallon wash tank that contains 15 percent solution of Bio T 300B. Light cutting and stamping oils are removed from the parts. The process by which the parts are cleaned is as follows:

Parts are dipped in a 15 percent solution of Bio T 300B (85 percent water). Total immersion time is approximately seven minutes. The wash tank runs at room temperature and is recirculated through a series of three 25-micron polypropylene bag filters.
Parts are then taken from the wash tank into a deionized water jet spray rinse. When rinse water becomes milky white it is pumped directly back into the wash tank. Total rinse time is about five minutes.
From the first rinse tank, the parts are then taken into an electrodeposition paint tank. The parts are grounded and the paint tank is charged. Paint adheres to the wet parts via charge differential.
From the paint tank, the parts are taken into a second water rinse tank. This rinse tank removes any excess paint from the parts.
Finally, the parts are placed in a hot air oven for drying.

The advantages of switching to Bio T 300B are numerous. Some of the major benefits from switching to Bio T 300B are listed below.

More effective cleaning system.
Higher quality paint process.
Reduced consumption of chemicals (15 percent compared to 50 percent concentration).
Less maintenance required by production workers.

Printed Circuit Board Cleaning

Cleaning/degreasing application.

Removal of flux and other contaminants on printed circuit boards.

Current problem.

The industry standard for PCB cleaning was 1,1,1 - trichloroethane (TCA). EPA regulations no longer permit the manufacture of TCA due to its ozone depleting properties. There are also significant concerns with the use of TCA that involve toxicity and workers safety. TCA contains known carcinogens. It is listed on the SARA Title III, Section 313 toxic chemicals list. Regulatory administrative expense for TCA is very high.

Bio T 200A - 5 Gallon Pail

Bio T 200A - 5 Gallon Pail

BioChem’s Bio T 200A full strength, low-residue formula is an ideal replacement for 1,1,1 trichloroethane in this cleaning application. Bio T 200A is a non-ozone depleting solvent. It is biodegradable, non-toxic, non-corrosive and free of petroleum distillates and chlorinated solvents. It provides the highest level of cleaning strength, and is safe for workers and the environment.

Bio T 200A is great for electrical cleaning applications due to its low conductivity (48,000 volts/cm). You will use less chemicals due to Bio T 200A’s low evaporation rate. And disposal concerns are minimized because Bio T 200A can be filtered and reused.

Bio T 200A can be used as a spray or immersion with ultrasonics or other forms of agitation. The following process is typically used in PCB cleaning:

PCB’s are dipped in an immersion bath of Bio T 200A along a conveyor belt.
Bio T 200A will remove all flux, grease, oil and fingerprints.
After being immersed in the 200A, PCB’s can be sent to an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) rinse to remove any residue left behind.
IPA rinse will decrease the drying time of the PCB’s.
After rinsing, forced air or heat can be used to ensure drying of the product.

Food Industry Cleaning

Cleaning/degreasing application.

Cleaning vegetable grease and oil from processing equipment in the food manufacturing industry.

Current problem.

Vegetable grease and oil can severely foul high speed food manufacturing equipment and cause unnecessary down time. Currently, production equipment must be stopped and thoroughly wiped down by hand to remove the grease and oil. The cleaning process of hand wiping equipment is time consuming and causes loss of production.

BioChem solution.

Bio T Max is an ideal product for cleaning applications in food manufacturing plants where vegetable grease and oil build-up is a problem. With its USDA Class C rating, Bio T Max has been used for years in meat packing facilities to clean animal fat from large processing areas.

Bio T Max is much more user-friendly than traditional cleaning solvents. It is 100% biodegradable, all natural, and has a clean citrus scent. It is also
completely non-toxic and non-corrosive.
Bio T Max can dramatically reduce cleanup time. It is completely water soluble which makes it easy to rinse from processing equipment and tools.

Bio T Max can be used a number of ways in the food manufacturing industry. Some of these methods include:

Bio T Max can be lightly sprayed on equipment, allowed time to dissolve the vegetable oil, and rinsed away with water.

Bio T Max can be injected with steam and used as a vapor phase cleaner. Water rinsing should follow the vapor phase cleaning.

Bio T Max can be kept in 32-ounce trigger spray bottles and stored at work stations to clean tools, equipment, concrete, and more.

Bio T Max can also be used to mop floors or in floor scrubbing equipment. Since Bio T Max is water dilutable, a few ounces in a mop bucket or floor scrubber with water is all that is needed to effectively clean floors.

The choice is clear. Bio T Max offers a safe and effective cleaning product for the food manufacturing industry. The all natural formulation makes it safe for employees as well as the environment. Bio T Max also contains no reportable chemicals and complies with most regulatory standards.
